Creative Commons Licenses for Research Data

CC0 – Public Domain Dedication (preferred by NCN) Transfer of the dataset to the public domain, allowing users to use the dataset without restriction and without any obligations.
CC BY 4.0 – Attribution (accepted by NCN) Allows users to copy, modify, distribute, and create new works or collections based on the licensed dataset, provided that attribution is given to the original author. Permits commercial use of the dataset.
CC BY-NC 4.0 – Attribution-NonCommercial Allows users to copy, modify, and distribute the licensed dataset solely for non-commercial purposes, provided that attribution is given.
CC BY-SA 4.0 – Attribution-ShareAlike Allows users to copy, modify, and distribute the dataset under the condition of attribution and sharing original and modified data under the same license. 
CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 – Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Allows users to copy, modify, and distribute datasets with the stipulation that both original and modified data are shared under the same license and only for non-commercial purposes. 
CC BY-ND 4.0 – Attribution-NoDerivatives Enables users to reuse the dataset provided attribution is given. However, modification of the dataset is not allowed. Not recommended for licensing research data as it practically prevents further work on the data.
CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 – Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives Allows users to download and share the dataset with attribution. The data cannot be modified or used commercially. This is the most restrictive license. Not recommended for licensing research data as it practically prevents further work on the data.

 

 

 

Database Licenses

PDDL (Public Domain Dedication and License PDDL) Public domain for databases; allows unlimited downloading, sharing, and modification of databases. 
ODC (Open Data Commons Attribution License ODC-BY) Permits copying and modifying the database provided attribution is given.
ODbL (Database License ODC – ODbL) Permits copying, processing, and distributing the database under the condition of attribution and sharing any modified database under the same terms as the original. 

 

Software Licenses

GNU GPL – General Public License Allows running, analyzing, distributing, and improving the software for any purpose. Derived works must be released under the same license, including the modified source code. 
GNU LGPL – Lesser General Public License Allows running, analyzing, distributing, and improving the software for any purpose. The copyleft restrictions apply only to individual source files. The license requires that only the original source code (source files) be made available in its original form, without derivative works.
